Celebrating the impactful life and lasting legacy of Michael Lennon

In loving memory of our cherished colleague and dear friend, Michael Lennon, the Department of Materials at Imperial College London has created this tribute website. Mike sadly passed away on 23 August 2023 following a brief illness.

Mike joined the department in January 2012 as a technician, having previously worked for ISP (Institute of Shock Physics) based in the Department of Aeronautics. A toolmaker by profession, Mike was a master craftsman and brought with him a wealth of skill and knowledge. His machining skills were second to none.

He took on the role of apprentice tutor, which he continued to do until June this year. From the very first cohort up until his most recent, Mike tutored 17 of our mechanical workshop apprentices, passing on his knowledge and machining skills to the next generation of technicians. He wasn’t just their tutor but also a mentor and sometimes agony uncle!

During his time in the RSM workshop, Mike became a familiar and friendly face, always ready to offer advice and help to staff and students.

Mike was far more than just a work colleague, regularly socialising with staff from the RSM workshop and other departments at social events outside of college.

He will be sorely missed, but he has left us with great memories.

We invite you to join us in celebrating his life and legacy by sharing your own memories, tributes, and thoughts.
